Snow Day vs Bus Cancellation: What Is the Difference?
A school may close, open late, or stay open while some bus routes are cancelled. The table shows how they differ. Each board and transportation provider decides locally.
| What Changes | Bus Cancellation | School Closure |
|---|---|---|
| Transportation | School buses may not operate on affected routes. | Normal student transportation does not operate because the school is closed. |
| School Operation | The school may remain open. | Classes or programs may be suspended or the site may close. |
| Who Decides | Transportation consortium or board, based on route and travel safety. | The school board. |
| Where to Look | Board and bus-consortium websites. | Board website and school channels. |
Snow Day
A school closure caused by weather. The most common term across Canada.
Storm Day
A term commonly used in Atlantic Canada for a weather-related closure.
Inclement Weather Day
A general term some boards use for any weather-related closure or cancellation.
Fermeture d’école
French for school closure. Quebec boards also announce transport scolaire annulé (bus cancellation) and may refer to a tempête de neige (snowstorm).
Winter Weather That Cancels School Buses Across Canada
Freezing rain, snow squalls, blizzards and extreme cold affect each region differently. These are general patterns, not fixed closure rules.
| Region | Winter hazards that commonly affect travel | What to watch in the forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | Lake-effect snow, snow squalls, freezing rain, blowing snow on rural routes | Overnight snowfall, ice, timing near the morning bus run |
| Quebec | Heavy snowfall, ice and freezing rain | Snow totals, freezing rain risk, road conditions |
| Prairies (AB, SK, MB) | Extreme cold, wind chill, blowing snow and blizzards | Wind chill, wind speed, visibility |
| Atlantic Canada | Winter storms, freezing rain and rapidly changing conditions | Storm timing, ice accumulation, wind |
| British Columbia | Wet snow and ice on hills and untreated roads | Temperature near freezing, elevation, overnight lows |
| Territories (YT, NT, NU) | Extreme cold, strong wind and low visibility | Wind chill and blowing snow |
Environment Canada Winter Alerts and School Travel
Environment and Climate Change Canada issues the official alerts below. They are not part of the score, so check them separately when severe weather is possible. Alert criteria vary by region.
| Alert type | What it signals | Why it matters for school buses |
|---|---|---|
| Snowfall warning | Heavy snow expected | Slower routes, late buses, blocked side streets |
| Freezing rain warning | Rain that freezes on contact | Icy roads and sidewalks; often a major trigger for bus cancellations |
| Winter storm warning | Snow combined with wind, ice or both | Longer disruptions, possible closures |
| Blowing snow advisory | Reduced visibility from wind-driven snow | Rural routes can be affected first |
| Blizzard warning | Strong wind, snow and very low visibility | Closures more likely, especially on the Prairies |
| Extreme cold warning | Dangerously low temperature or wind chill | Buses may not start; waiting outside is risky |
How Our Snow Day Predictor Works
Each forecast day gets a 0–100 score built from four weather factors. This is the only full explanation of the scoring on the site. The score shows how strongly the forecast supports a snow day; it does not model what a board will decide.
Snowfall Forecast
Up to 40 pointsThe largest factor. More expected accumulation scores higher, with the maximum at 10 cm or more, because heavy snow affects roads and sidewalks.
Chance of Snow
Up to 30 pointsA higher snow probability gives the forecast stronger support for snow that day. The maximum applies at 80% or higher.
Minimum Temperature
Up to 20 pointsColder overnight lows raise the potential for icy or difficult travel. The maximum applies at −5°C or colder.
Winter Conditions
Up to 10 pointsA bonus when the forecast wording includes snow, heavy snow, freezing rain, sleet, ice or blizzard.
Why Wind and Wind Chill Are Not Scored
The score is built on snow and temperature signals so it stays simple and explainable. Wind and wind chill are shown in the tables for planning, but extreme cold can still disrupt travel without any snow, so check Environment Canada for extreme cold warnings.
Hourly Travel Risk Is Separate
The hourly table and the 6–9 AM commute summary are planning aids. They use hourly snow, wind and ice wording and are not part of the 100-point score.
How Canadian School Boards Decide Snow Days
Boards and their transportation consortia weigh road conditions, forecasts and local timing. Many bus cancellations are announced by the consortium that runs the buses, not by the board itself.
Weather & Road Conditions
Boards look at current and forecast snowfall, freezing rain, ice and extreme cold together with road and travel conditions.
Local Conditions & Timing
Conditions differ between communities and can change during a storm. Boards often review updated forecasts and road reports early in the morning.
Where Decisions Are Posted
Boards post on their websites and social channels. Bus consortia, such as the Toronto Student Transportation Group or the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority, post route cancellations. In Quebec, each centre de services scolaire posts its own notices.
Snow Day Predictor for Canadian Students, Parents, and Teachers
For Parents
Check the score the evening before and again in the morning. If it is high, line up childcare or a backup plan early.
For Students
A high score means a higher snow day possibility, not that school is cancelled. Wait for the announcement before assuming a day off.
For Teachers & Staff
Use the hourly table to plan your commute and watch your board’s staff channels for updates.

AlbertaThe Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the Calgary Catholic School District are the main boards. Chinook winds can swing temperatures quickly, so conditions can change within hours.
Calgary snow day prediction →Edmonton
AlbertaEdmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools serve the city. Long stretches of extreme cold and wind chill matter alongside snowfall.
Edmonton snow day prediction →Vancouver
British ColumbiaThe Vancouver School Board serves the city. Even light snow or ice on hills can disrupt travel because winter weather is less frequent than in most Canadian cities.
Vancouver snow day prediction →Winnipeg
ManitobaWinnipeg School Division and nearby divisions decide locally. Extreme cold, wind chill and blowing snow are the key winter factors on the Prairies.
Winnipeg snow day prediction →Halifax
Nova ScotiaThe Halifax Regional Centre for Education covers the region and may announce a storm day. Coastal storms, freezing rain and temperatures near freezing make timing hard to forecast.
Halifax snow day prediction →Hamilton
OntarioThe Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board serve the city, with buses run through Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services. Snow, ice and hilly escarpment routes affect travel.
Hamilton snow day predictor →Mississauga
OntarioServed by the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Bus notices come through Student Transportation of Peel Region, so check both the boards and the consortium.
Mississauga snow day predictor →Barrie
OntarioServed by the Simcoe County District School Board and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, with buses through the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium. Snow squalls in central Ontario change conditions quickly.
Barrie snow day predictor →London
OntarioServed by the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board. Snowbelt squalls off the Great Lakes can affect parts of southwestern Ontario.

Accuracy & Important Disclaimer
We do not publish a single accuracy percentage because forecast reliability varies by location, lead time and storm type. The score is a weather-based estimate, not a school, bus or workplace closure notice. Always confirm with your school board, bus provider and Environment Canada.
Why Accuracy Varies
Forecasts change as new observations arrive. Road conditions, bus routes, school facilities and board policies also differ between communities.
Where Forecasts Struggle
Freezing rain timing, lake-effect snow squalls and temperatures hovering near 0°C are hard to forecast and can change the outcome quickly.
How to Use the Result
Treat the score as a planning signal. Check it the evening before and again early the next morning.
Weather Data Sources
Forecasts and location lookups come from the providers below. Forecast responses are cached for up to 15 minutes, and the update time appears in the Current Weather card. Postal codes and Use My Location are converted to coordinates with OpenStreetMap Nominatim.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a snow day predictor?
A snow day predictor estimates how likely winter weather is to disrupt school. This one scores the forecast for your location from 0 to 100 using snowfall, snow chance, minimum temperature and winter conditions.
Will there be a snow day tomorrow?
Enter your city or postal code to see the chances of a snow day tomorrow. Check it the evening before and again early in the morning, because forecasts change. Only your school board or bus provider can announce an actual closure.
How is the snow day score calculated?
The score adds four forecast factors, from 0 to 100. Snowfall, snow chance, minimum temperature and winter conditions each have a maximum number of points. See the full breakdown in How Our Snow Day Predictor Works.
Is this an official closure or school bus cancellation predictor?
No. It is a weather-based school cancellation predictor, not an official announcement. A high score does not guarantee a closure, a bus cancellation or a workplace closure, and a low score does not rule one out. Boards also weigh road conditions, routes and local factors.
What is the difference between a snow day and a bus cancellation?
A snow day means the school is closed; a bus cancellation means buses do not run but the school may stay open. Policies differ by board and transportation provider. See the comparison table above.
What is a storm day?
“Storm day” is a term commonly used in Atlantic Canada for a weather-related school closure. Other regions say snow day, inclement weather day or bus cancellation. In Quebec you may see fermeture d’école or transport scolaire annulé.
Does freezing rain cancel school buses?
Yes, freezing rain is one of the most common triggers for bus cancellations, even with little snow. Ice makes roads and sidewalks hazardous. Check for an Environment Canada freezing rain warning and your bus provider’s notices. The score only partly reflects ice, through its winter-conditions factor.
Do school boards announce closures by 6 AM?
Many boards aim to decide early in the morning, before buses run, but timing varies. Some decide the evening before for major storms. Bus cancellations may be posted by the transportation consortium rather than the board, so check both.
How many snow days does Toronto get?
There is no fixed number; it varies a lot from winter to winter. Full school closures are rare in many winters, while bus cancellations and delays are more common. Check the Toronto District School Board and its transportation consortium for current-year notices.
Does wind chill affect the snow day score?
No. Wind chill is shown for planning but is not part of the score. The score uses minimum temperature. Extreme cold and wind can still disrupt travel, especially on the Prairies and in the territories, so check Environment Canada for extreme cold warnings.
Can I search by postal code or use my location?
Yes. Enter a Canadian postal code or tap Use My Location. Details on how locations are looked up are in the data sources section.
Why does the score show 0% in summer?
Because there is no snow or cold in the forecast. Outside the usual winter season most Canadian locations score near zero.
