SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION GUIDE

Bus Cancellation vs School Closure

A bus cancellation does not always mean a school is closed. Depending on the school board and transportation provider, transportation and school-operation decisions can be made separately using local weather, road and safety information.

What Changes Bus Cancellation School Closure
Transportation School buses may not operate on affected routes. Normal student transportation does not operate because the school is closed.
School Operation The school may remain open. Classes or school programs may be suspended or the school site may close.
Decision Transportation providers or boards assess route and travel safety. The school board makes the official school-operation decision.
What to Check Check your school board or transportation provider for route updates. Check the official school-board announcement before travelling.
Policies differ by school board and region. This table explains the general distinction. Always follow the official local announcement.

HOW SNOW DAY PREDICTOR WORKS

Weather Factors Behind a Snow Day Estimate

A snow day depends on more than one weather variable. This tool combines forecast snowfall, snow probability, minimum temperature and winter-weather conditions into a simple 0–100 planning score. The score helps explain the forecast; it does not replace an official school or transportation decision.

Show the 6 scoring factors

Snowfall Forecast

Forecast snowfall is the largest part of the model, with up to 40 points. Higher expected accumulation contributes more to the score because substantial snow can affect roads, sidewalks and travel conditions.

Chance of Snow

Snow probability contributes up to 30 points. A higher probability means the forecast has stronger support for snow during the selected day. Probability is still a forecast measure, not a guarantee.

Freezing Temperatures

The minimum forecast temperature contributes up to 20 points. Colder overnight conditions can increase the potential for icy or difficult travel, although actual road conditions depend on many local factors.

Winter Weather Conditions

The model adds a winter-condition bonus when forecast wording contains terms such as snow, heavy snow, freezing rain, sleet, ice or blizzard. This adds context without treating one weather phrase as a closure decision.

Wind Chill & Hourly Conditions

The hourly section shows temperature, snow chance, expected snowfall and wind for the next 12 hours, plus a 6–9 AM commute summary. These details support daily planning but are not part of the published 100-point snow-day score.

School & Bus Decisions

School closures and bus cancellations are local operational decisions. Boards and transportation providers can consider road conditions, forecasts, routes, safety and other information that a general weather score cannot fully represent.

SCHOOL BOARD DECISION PROCESS

How Canadian School Boards Decide Snow Days

Canadian school boards use local procedures to assess whether winter conditions affect school operations or transportation. Weather forecasts are one input, while road conditions, transportation safety, local impacts and operational information can also affect the decision.

Show how school boards decide

Weather & Road Conditions

Boards can consider current and forecast weather together with road and travel conditions. Snowfall, freezing rain, ice, extreme cold and other winter hazards may affect the assessment.

Transportation Safety

Bus operations can involve route conditions, road safety and transportation-specific information. A transportation cancellation can therefore be separate from a decision to close schools.

Local Conditions & Timing

Conditions can vary between communities and can change during a winter event. Boards may review updated forecasts, local reports and conditions before communicating a decision.

Official Decision & Communication

The school board or its designated decision-makers communicate official school or transportation changes. Families should use the board, school and transportation provider’s official channels for final information.

Decision procedures vary by board. Weather and road conditions can be considered when assessing winter impacts, while transportation cancellations may be handled separately from school closures. Always check your own school board’s current procedure and official announcements.
CANADA SNOW DAY INFORMATION

Snow Day Predictor for Canadian Students, Parents, and Teachers

Snow Day Predictor Canada provides snow day forecasts, weather-based school closure and bus cancellation risk, winter weather insights and snowfall forecasts for communities across Canada.

For Parents

Check the score the evening before, then confirm with your school board and bus provider in the morning. If the score is high, it can help to line up childcare or a backup plan early.

For Students

A high score means winter conditions are more likely, not that school is cancelled. Wait for the official announcement before assuming you have the day off.

For Teachers & Staff

Use the forecast to plan your commute and check your board’s staff communication channels. The hourly section shows when snow is expected around the morning commute.

How Accurate Is Our Snow Day Predictor?

The Snow Day Predictor does not publish a fixed accuracy percentage because forecast accuracy can vary by location, forecast lead time and the type of winter weather event. The score is a weather-based estimate, not a guarantee of a school closure.

Show accuracy details

What the Score Can Do

The score summarizes forecast snowfall, snow probability, minimum temperature and winter-weather conditions into a simple 0–100 estimate. It helps explain the weather factors behind the result.

Why Accuracy Varies

Weather forecasts can change as new observations and forecast updates become available. Local road conditions, school facilities, bus routes and board policies can also differ between communities.

How to Use the Result

Use the score as a winter-weather planning signal. For the final decision about school, buses or travel, check the latest official announcement from your school board, transportation provider and government weather service.

SNOW DAY PREDICTOR FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a snow day predictor?

A snow day predictor is a weather-based planning tool that estimates the likelihood of disruptive winter conditions. This tool uses the available forecast data for the selected location and applies its published scoring method.

How do I check if school will be closed tomorrow?

Enter your city or Canadian postal code to see tomorrow’s snow day score, then confirm with your school board website and transportation provider. Only the board or its transportation provider can announce an official closure or bus cancellation.

How is the Snow Day Predictor score calculated?

The score uses four forecast factors: snowfall amount, chance of snow, minimum temperature and winter-weather conditions. Snowfall contributes up to 40 points, snow chance up to 30 points, freezing temperature up to 20 points and a winter-condition bonus up to 10 points.

Can this tool predict official school closures?

No. The score is a weather-based estimate, not an official closure announcement. School boards can consider road conditions, buses, local forecasts, school facilities and other operational factors. Always check your local board or school for the final decision.

What is the difference between a snow day and a bus cancellation?

A snow day means the school is closed. A bus cancellation means buses do not run on affected routes, but the school may stay open. Policies differ by school board and transportation provider.

Does freezing rain affect snow day decisions?

Freezing rain, sleet and ice can create hazardous travel conditions even when snowfall totals are limited. The predictor recognizes several winter-weather terms as part of its weather-condition factor, but it does not replace an official road, school or weather advisory.

What is wind chill and why does it matter?

Wind chill describes how cold the air can feel when wind is combined with the actual temperature. The hourly section shows temperature, snow chance, expected snowfall and wind, while the snow-day score separately uses forecast minimum temperature. Extreme cold can affect travel even without snow.

Can I search a Canadian postal code?

Yes. Canadian postal codes are supported. The tool first resolves the postal code through a geocoding service and then uses the resulting coordinates for the weather request.

Can I use my current location?

Yes. Select Use My Location and allow your browser to provide location access. The tool then requests weather for the detected coordinates and reverse-geocodes them to display a nearby place name.

How often is the forecast updated?

Weather data is requested from the forecast provider and cached for up to 15 minutes, so the page stays fast while still reflecting recent forecast changes. The last-updated time is shown in the current weather card.

Why does the score show 0% in summer?

The score is based on forecast snowfall, snow chance and cold temperatures. Outside the usual winter season most Canadian locations have no snow in the forecast, so the score stays near zero.

Does a high score guarantee a snow day?

No. A high score indicates that the forecast contains more of the winter-weather factors used by this model. It does not guarantee a school closure, bus cancellation or workplace closure.
